5 Things to Not Do When Wedding Dress Shopping

Wedding dress shopping is a big deal — and while it’s exciting and emotional, it can also get overwhelming. The pressure to find the one, make everyone happy, and stay on budget while also looking your absolute best? Yeah, it’s a lot.
Let’s take a breath — and talk real talk. Here are five things we encourage our brides not to do during their dress shopping journey. Trust us, avoiding these will make your experience so much better.

1. Don’t Bring the Whole Crew
Yes, we know it’s tempting to invite your mom, your future MIL, your besties, and that cousin who swears she “just knows dresses.” But here’s the thing: too many opinions can drown out your own.
We recommend keeping your guest list small and intentional — bring the people who know you best and want what you want. (You can always FaceTime Aunt Linda.)
2. Don’t Shop Before You’re Ready
If your wedding is still two years away or you haven’t nailed down your venue vibe, it might be too soon to start seriously shopping. Your style, season, or vision could shift — and falling in love with a dress before you're truly ready can complicate things.
We recommend starting about 12 months out — it's the sweet spot for ordering, fittings, and breathing room.
3. Don’t Box Yourself In
Have a Pinterest board? Amazing. But be open. So many brides fall in love with something completely different than what they imagined. Maybe it’s the texture, the neckline, or a silhouette you didn’t think would flatter you (spoiler: it does).
Trust your stylist — and trust the process.
4. Don’t Focus on the Number
Size is just a number. Bridal sizing is weird. Try not to get hung up on the tag. Our job is to fit you — your body, your style, your comfort — not some outdated standard.
At New Ivory, we celebrate every body, and we’ll guide you into a gown that fits like a dream and makes you feel like you.
5. Don’t Ignore the Feeling
You might not cry. Your mom might not gasp. And that’s okay. What matters is how you feel in the dress. Do you feel like a bride? Do you feel confident, calm, seen? That’s your dress.
The bottom line? This should be joyful. This should feel comfortable and easy. Don’t overthink it — and don’t let the noise steal your moment.
Your dream dress is out there, and we can’t wait to help you find it.
